Archie Norman speaks about cannabis
January 2000
Thank you for your letter arguing for the legalisation of cannabis. I apologise for the delay in replying.
I understand the case for legalisation and am not in general in favour of regulations which are widely abused or perceived as unnecessary. Those involved however with the issue of hard drugs remain very much opposed to legalisation. And there is an argument that it would accelerate and encourage the experimentation and use of other drugs.
The issue of the medicinal use of cannabis is more interesting and should be approached with a great d of caution. However if a strong case can be made for the medical use of cannabis I would look at it very carefully.
